“[A] big bang. At first I thought it was the trees, then all [of] a sudden I smell smoke,” resident Ngun Zathang told 9News.
Security cameras captured the Honda Sedan turning onto Prunus Avenue in the Northern Suburbs just after 5am.
The vehicle then mounts the curb, hits a tree, and swerves into the front of the house.
The car comes within metres of the two children who were fast asleep in the front bedrooms.
“It just went through my heart and I still can’t process it because my child is right there and room is right here,” Ms Zathang said.
Neighbouring residents ran up to help the driver who had climbed out the car window and picked up cans of alcohol, seemingly unaware of the damage done.
“He got out the car and he was still drinking these [alcohol cans],” Lal Ponenai, Ms Zathang ‘s brother, said.
The 23-year-old driver allegedly begged the family not to call police, but authorities were on the scene within minutes.
Police breath tested the driver who returned a reading of 0.227, which is more than four times the legal limit.
The family say it was extremely lucky that the car clipped a tree before the home, otherwise the impact could’ve been a lot more severe.
“If he went a little bit more, at least half a metre in more deep I reckon my sister would of been injured pretty bad,” Mr Ponenai said.
The driver has been reported for drink driving and is set to face court at a later date.
