Free parking in Inverclyde’s ‘pay and display’ car parks has been extended

FREE parking in Inverclyde’s ‘pay and display’ car parks has been extended until the end of September using £170,000 of funding.

The measure aims to encourage people back to the shops once the few remaining Covid restrictions are lifted and working from home guidance is relaxed.

Parking charges have been suspended since the beginning of the pandemic

Members of Inverclyde Council’s policy and resources executive sub-committee approved the extension alongside a host of other measures as they decided how £1.25m of Scottish Government Covid recovery cash should be spent.

It was recommended that the council’s share of the funding be split, with £500,000 being put aside to provide direct support to low income households and £730,000 put towards support to businesses.

The £170,000 used to extend the free parking was taken from the business portion of the funding.

In addition to the parking measures, councillors signed off on doubling the £75 heating payment for over-70s who qualify for support.

The elected members also agreed to retain a 40 per cent uplift to crisis grants awards for 2022/23.
