Young dad Kyle Jones killed in smash between bike and car, inquest told

The inquest into the tragic death of a young father has been suspended to allow a police investigation to take place. It follows a fatal road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a car in Stechford.

Kyle Jones, 23 – known as ‘Ky Ky’ – was fatally injured after a crash at the junction of Audley Road and Flaxley Road. He died at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital on March 23.

Scores of tributes have poured in for Kyle, from Solihull. Flowers, balloons in his name, touching messages and pictures were left at the roadside where he died.

Today, Simon Brenchley, an Assistant Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, opened an inquest into the death at Birmingham Coroner’s Court. Mr Brenchley told the hearing: “In this particular case, the rationale for opening an inquest is that Kyle Tahir Jones died as a result of a road traffic collision.”

He said that coroner’s investigator Paul Hodson submitted a statement about the case on March 31. Mr Brenchley said: “He (Mr Hodson) said the name of the deceased was Kyle Tahir Jones, he lived in Solihull in the West Midlands. He was aged 23 years at the time of his death.

“He was born in Birmingham and he died on 23 March, 2022, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. In life he was a hotel worker and he was single.” The coroner said the deceased was identified visually by his mother to hospital staff on the same day.

Mr Brenchley added: “In this particular case, the coroner has received confirmation from West Midlands Police that they are investigating the circumstances of the death and a suspect has been arrested in connection with the death and remains under suspicion on a relevant offence.

“It is therefore appropriate to suspend a coroner’s investigation under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 in order to allow the police investigation to take its natural course. The coroner will be asking for regular updates and, when appropriate, will make a decision on whether the inquest needs to be resumed.”

The coroner added: “I would like to express my condolences to the family and confirm this inquest is being suspended rather than adjourned.”

A 23-year-old man was detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving under the influence and failing to stop, after he attended a police station. Following questioning he was released under investigation.

A man, in his 30s, held on suspicion of causing serious injury, was also released pending further investigation. Anyone with information should message police via Live Chat at, quoting investigation number 20/BE/12478/22, or call 101.
